Fundus Picture and Tear Glucose in Diabetic Subjects

Abstract
The glucose level in the tear was measured with spectrophotometer in a total of 74 dia¡þbetic subjects and 30 normal subjects as control.
The glucose level in the tear in normal and diabetic subjects averaged 1.86mg/de and 10.18mg/de respectively, which corresponded about 1. 92% and 3. 97% of the blood glucose level.
Fluorescein fundus angiography was conducted on diabetic subjects and comparison was made with the color fundus photography as control.
Fluorescein fundus photography revealed many more microaneurysms than color fundus photography in 81% of the patients with micr3aneurysm.
As the diabetic retinopathy was classified as minimal diabetic retinopathy, microaneury¡þsmal retinopathy and exudative retinopathy, difference in the tear glucose and blood glucose level were presented.
The glucose level in the tear and blood were higher in cases with microanuryamal reti¡þnopathy and lower in cases with exudative retinopathy.
It can be suggested that the fluorescein fundus angiography is more preferable to find the initial diabetic retinopathy and also the increase of tear glucose will suggest the suspi¡þcious microaneurysmal retinopathy.
